Visit to Catedrál de León
This week our class went on a field trip to the Catedrál de León here in León, Spain. I've been looking forward to this, and it did not disappoint! I've shared pictures of the outside of the building before, which is very impressive, but I was not prepared for the beautiful stained-glass windows inside the building. I took pictures, but honestly, you really need to see this in person to understand the real impact it has on you when the sun shines through the glass and creates an array of such exquisite brilliance that you can't even comprehend. It's like it passes through your physical eyes and reflects off your very soul. Needless to say, it was very, very beautiful.
This was my favorite stained-glass window in the building.
I was also fascinated by the early "microphone" they had mounted above each pulpit. This wasn't electronic, of course, but it worked by creating an echo that could reverberate throughout the hall so the sound would carry farther. It was elaborately decorated as well.
Ancient Microphone Mounted over Pulpit
There were other interesting things inside the cathedral such as old tombs and things of that nature, but I was so overcome by the stained glass, that I didn't get any pictures of anything else. Here are a few more pictures of the stained glass. Keep in mind that the entire cathedral has solid stained-glass walls in all three stories, so this is only a small sampling of what was there. It is shown with the weakness of the limited abilities of the camera to capture and the screen to display, making a paltry effort to reproduce the magnificence of the actual experience.
Each side of the cathedral displayed a different color. This was the yellow side.
I've honestly fallen in love with this place. I'm only here for about another month, so I'm hopeful that I'll be able to take in as much as I can before I get back. One way or another, there's always going to be a little piece of León, España, in my heart no matter where I go for the rest of my life. I'm honored that I have been able to spend time in this wonderful city.
